We've been enjoying fresh produce or a bit now. But it's a great idea to have your garden produce stored over the winter. So after tips from my mom, mom in law and grandma this is my take on how to harvest and prep certain produce items for the alberta winter.
By no means am I an expert. This is just what I do. ;-)
Beans:
Pick them, wash them, snap ends of (great husband or Kid job) , cut into but size prices. Put in ziplock bag and freeze. Last year I spent time blanching but after a bit of research and talking to my mom-in-law. I voted for no blanching this year. Just do it!
Peas:
As they become available.. Pick, shell, rinse. Freeze.
Alternatively. I also do a meal size ready to boil. So you bring a pot of fresh peas to just boil. Remove from heat then freeZe in meal size portions with the water.
Cucumbers:
Just eat them!!! Ha. But I do pickle them. The fast and easy way. I buy this:Dill Pickle Mix
Follow the instructions and end up with pickles. Yay. Easy peasy.
Tomatoes....
Mine aren't ready yet so I'll have to discuss in part 2 of this post but wow my one cherry tomatoe plant is over 4 feet tall!!!
